Be Prepared!

Severe Weather

We have heard it said that if you don’t like the weather here in Arkansas, just wait – it will change soon! The weather pattern that we have been in for the past few years has been unpredictable and deadly. We can’t always know what Mother Nature has in store for us but we can prepare ourselves for what she dishes out.

The first step to surviving severe weather is to invest in a NOAA weather radio. These units can save your life and the lives of your family in knowing exactly where a storm is. A weather radio can be programmed with your area and it will alert you even in the middle of the night.

It is wise to have a plan of action if a storm is coming your way. Prepare your family with “storm drills” in your safe place or storm shelter. Have an emergency family contact in another area or state so that there will be one point of contact for all family members. Have a home emergency kit prepared with the following items:

  • Bottled water (3 gallons per family member – don’t forget your pets)
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • NOAA weather alert radio
  • First Aid Kit
  • Emergency Battery Charger for Cell Phones
  • Candles and water-proof matches
  • Blankets
  • Ponchos or other rain gear
  • List of contacts
  • Insurance Agent contact information
  • Family Members
  • Copies of ALL insurance policies in waterproof packet
  • List of prescription drugs
  • Disposable Camera

If the unthinkable does happen and your property is in a storm related loss, Best Builders, Inc. can handle any size loss, residential or commercial. Whether is it an emergency cover-up, a roof patch or a whole roof – we can take care of you from start to finish.

Water Damage

When a water loss occurs in your home, your first reaction may be, “Oh this is just a little water. I’ll just mop it up.” It may look like only a little water, but have you considered the possibility that it could have traveled under a wall? Down the hall? What about mold growth? It’s the water you don’t see that you should be concerned about. If you think about it, any water loss could be a problem when you want to sell your home or if it affects the health of your family. To cancel out any possibility of these predicaments, call a certified water restoration contractor to fully dry the structure and to treat the affected areas with an antimicrobial solution to reduce the risk of mildew growth and odor. Restoration Contractors are also trained to seek out the possible path of water and any subsequent damage. It is important that even if a loss is not covered by your insurance or if it doesn’t reach your deductible, you should have mitigate the water in a timely manner and that you use a CERTIFIED RESTORATION CONTRACTOR. There IS a difference!

  • Emergency Water Loss Information
  • Shut off the source of water
  • Limit access to loss area
  • Notify insurance agent
  • Call a certified restoration contractor

After the structure has dried to IICRC industry standards, usually within 3 to 5 days, reconstruction can begin. Depending on the severity of the damage, Best Builders, Inc. can bring your home back to pre-loss condition in a timely manner.

Black Water Toilet Overflow

When little Jimmy flushes his stuffed animal down the toilet, he thinks it’s funny – you freak out! Or what if you get up in the middle of the night and smell sewage, you turn on the light and you see the unthinkable – Do what any sane homeowner does: # 1 – run screaming for the plunger and #2 – call a certified restoration contractor. Sewage or black water is nothing to ignore. Even “gray water” (water from the bowl with no waste) can cause bacterial growth that can affect your family’s health-don’t live with it. Don’t attempt any cleanup on your own – allow a professional restoration contractor with EPA registered disinfectants to handle this type of loss.

Usually with this type of loss, all soft surface flooring should be removed (ex. Carpet, pad, parquet flooring), because of its porosity. All area rugs should be discarded as well as any other item affected by the water. Tile and vinyl flooring can be sanitized and made safe for the homeowner. Wood flooring (laminate) may need to be replaced if water traveled underneath. It is possible that there may be some drywall work done depending on what transpired during mitigation. Best Builders knows what to expect when we come on to one of these losses – we can make a traumatic event almost a non-event.

Fire/Smoke/Soot

Have you ever left a skillet on the stove and walked away for “just a minute”? Left a candle burning? Dropped a cigarette on the carpet? Log roll out of the fireplace? Any of these sources can cause soot to be tracked throughout your home. Did you know that there are different kinds of soot? We, at Best Builders, understand the difference and know how to handle the special methods of restoration to get your home back to pre-loss condition. As a homeowner, you should not attempt handling the cleanup after a fire and you could possibly cause more damage if you attempt to clean it yourself.

Steps to Properly Handle a Fire Claim
After the fire department leaves, call your insurance agent
Call a restoration contractor specializing in insurance claims
Restrict access to affected areas
Don’t touch walls, furniture and definitely don’t sit on upholstered furniture
If you must enter the structure, lay down towels or rags to walk on to limit damage to flooring.
